Toy Soldier
Hi there, I made this card for the May Challenge " Pick a previous sketch" for 52 {Christmas} card throwdown, http://52cct.blogspot.com.au/ the sketch chosen was from January 2012, and I embossed the topper with Sizzex Snow Flurry embossing folder and distressed the edges with Tim Holtz distress tool. I used a piece of red Christmas paper out of my left over basket for the flag, and a round piece of green cardstock cut with an impress nesting die, I used Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers die to cut out the toy soldier and I painted him with water colour and shaded him with Tim's distress ink "Vintage Photo" the sentiment was another "left over" I used Liquid Perfect Pearls "White Opal" for the pearls on the circle and on the soldier's cap. I shaded around the edges of the card with Memento Ink Pad "Cottage Ivy" Not so sure about how this looks and will probably make another card for this challenge!

ReplyDeleteTerrific use of traditional colors Jasann! I love nutcrackers and have several of them out each Christmas. Thanks for joining us this week at 52CCT.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, Jasmine...although the soldier may not appreciate that I just called him beautiful! Great use of the LPs on his hat. Thanks for joining our May Pick-A-Previous Sketch challenge at 52 {C}CT. Have a great week!
ReplyDeletehugs, Asha
Hi Jas, it's difficult when you're 'not so sure' about how a card looks and often you can't quite put your finger on why you're not totally happy. With me it's often a question of balance in the layout, something just seems off. It's a matter of trial and error I think - well, it is in my craft room, I can spend ages debating on the placement of elements!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to take the liberty of offering some feedback by making a suggestion, I hope that's OK and that you find it helpful and useful. : ) I think maybe the oval sentiment is not helping to balance the design as well as a larger, circular sentiment element might do. Perhaps test out a few different sentiment element shapes/sizes - but without gluing anything down - and try keeping with your lovely traditional bright red and green colours for the sentiment and see if that makes you 'more sure' about the card!
I love the way you coloured the toy soldier, the shading around the outside of the figure finishes him off wonderfully! The pearly accents on the hat and around the circle are fab and the embossed panel and the red holly paper flag are great, festive touches!
Thanks so much for playing along with us again at 52 {C}CT, your festive card stash must be growing nicely! Happy crafting! : ) Ruth x
I love Nutcracker guys and your traditional colours are really super. Thanks so much for playing along with 52CCT this week!
ReplyDeletePS I think Ruth's advice is fab. I think when I make cards, I spend a lot of time playing with layouts before sticking anything down! I sometimes take photos on my cell phone too and compare! Have fun!
